Orbital manufacturing facilities are, for the most part, the only place where critical war material, such as refined laser crystals and armor plating, can be manufactured economically in quantity. These facilities are, therefore, prime targets for raids and attacks.

The various grades of orbital industrial facilities are listed below. Game statistics for use with Interceptor and Leviathan are also listed where appropriate.

OF1: Small Robotic Industrial Facility

An OF1 facility manufactures specialized industrial products, such as one-of-a-kind machine parts or small batches of pharmaceuticals. Automatic shuttles transport raw materials and finished goods to and from the factory. Unless the manufacturing process requires, there are no habitable areas on this facility.

An OF1 has a limited automatic defense system to protect it against space attack. The Gunnery, Fighter/Small Craft expert system has a skill between -3 and +3, depending on the likelihood of attack, and an effective DX of 11.

OF2: Large Robotic Industrial Facility

Like a small robotic facility, this grade of orbital facility receives, processes, and delivers its raw materials without the need for living personnel. A large robotic facility normally specializes in large-scale mineral refining operations or industrial processes that require mass production and a Zero-G environment. Examples include degassing masses of titanium armor for use on military vehicles.

Therefore, an OF2 industrial facility normally does not produce finished goods. Its output is usually shipped to other industrial factories for final production. A small habitat for maintenance crews is standard on these facilities, but the rest of the installation is not habitable.

Like an OF1, an OF2 has an automatic defense governed by an expert system. This system's primary skill is Gunnery, Fighter/Small Craft (+1 to +3), and it has an effective DX of 11.

OF3: Small Manned Factory

An OF3 is a low-output factory, similar in size to a large robotic facility. An OF3 is used for the manufacture or processing of unique goods that require Human skills and a Zero-G environment. Work crews rotate, typically spending one month in three on duty in orbit.

OF4: Medium Manned Factory

An OF4 is well-staffed, maintains its own shuttles and transports, and has permanent crew facilities. Typical OF4 examples include crystal farms for processing G-A gemstones and smaller VLCAs. In systems where attacks are likely, such stations are heavily armed. Armaments include a squadron of fighters as well as at least a century of Marines aboard for security purposes.

OF5: Large Manned Factory

An OF5 is the largest of the orbital facilities. It is usually heavily populated with a full-time staff of workers and their dependents, and is a fully functioning community. These facilities are relatively rare and have extensive armaments, including berths for up to 48 fighters.
