Etymology[]

In keeping with the KessRith tradition of naming starfighters for objects of natural beauty, the Na´Ctka Moquka ("Fluttering Petal") is named for petals wafted on the breeze. In Kess literature, falling blossoms are an allegorical picture reminding the reader of the fact that a warrior´s life is short, but death (in battle) is beautiful.

Design Philosophy and Tactical Role[]

The Na´Ctka Moquka is a KessRith design that has become the standard two-seat fighter for all forces fighting TOG. The Petal´s graceful curves and fragile appearance belie its underlying ruggedness and awesome firepower. It is usually deployed in fleet- and system based attack squadrons in areas where heavy fighting against strong enemy forces is likely. Its staying power and ability to dish out damage stand it in good stead in protracted actions that would become a meat grinder for less resilient fighters.

The Petal is a classic product of KessRithian design philosophy. Kess believe that acceleration should be secondary to strong shielding and armour, and that offensive armaments should be exclusively laser-based. When the designers gave in to strong requests from Commonwealth and Renegade Legion military leaders for at least two missile hardpoints and the installation of the mass drivers, they did so only grudgingly. The resultant weapons mix has proven very effective, though, and the gunner-operated turret gives the Petal an edge in the chaotic "furball" of a dogfight.

Fleet Action[]

The Petal is a favourite fighter for squadron-level fleet engagements. Both the fighters and their crews seem to relish a protracted close-in slugfest. In adequate numbers, they can be a substantial threat even to a battleship. Renegade and Commonwealth units prefer to mix Na´Ctka Moqukas in with other fighters to stiffen the formation; often the Petals provide the backbone of the attack while the lighter fighters run interference and keep enemy fighters off their backs.

Raiding Action[]

Capital ships and carriers assigned to raiding action rarely carry Fluttering Petals unless they expect to need heavy firepower to eliminate a target in a single pass. The Petal´s low acceleration is a distinctive liability in the sort of quick hit-and-run action that characterises a raid, so raiding vessels usually carry faster and lighter fighters.

Variant: High-Thrust Modification[]

This variant is something of a misnomer, since the change in weapons loadout does not increase the Petal´s speed appreciably. The modification is usually done for special sorties and can be done at an air base or on a carrier vessel between missions. The main 7.5/5 lasers are removed and replaced with missile hardpoints.[3] On lighter fighters, this is usually done to enable the craft to carry surveillance equipment in detachable sensor pods. Heavy fighters like the Na´Ctka Moquka use the modification to carry more missiles for a strong one-salvo punch, albeit at the cost of a significant degradation in combat endurance. The variant is used mainly in strike missions.

Fleet Action[]

The increased number of hardpoints makes the Petal a viable capital ship killer with a heavy one-time missile salvo. Often, the existing Petals in a cruiser or battleship squadron are converted when fighting against other Leviathans is expected. To maximise their salvo´s offensive power, they are usually deployed in flights of 24 fighters each.

Raiding Action[]

Petals riding with raiding carriers are often modified to carry more missiles; the fighter´s low agility and acceleration mean that it rarely gets more than a single pass against a target installation, and the increased missile load amplifies the single punch they can throw.

Variant: KessRith Na´Ctka Moquka[]

The original Na´Ctka Moquka, prior to its introduction to the Commonwealth military, was exclusively laser-armed, with two tiny 1.5/1 laser cannon instead of the missile hardpoints and heavy 7.5/6 lasers mounted on the wings.

KessRith designs incorporate sturdy frames and heavy armour plating, and laser cannon are better able to cut through this kind of thick protection. Speed is a secondary issue to survivability and firepower, and as a result of the heavier weapons loadout the Kess variant of the Na´Ctka has very low accelaration. KessRith pilots rarely complain, and in fact, some Kess fighter units flying for the Commonwealth have inofficially re-converted their Petals to this variant.[4]

Fleet Action[]

Unlike their Commonwealth counterparts who like to distribute their heavy Petals with other fighters in mixed units, the KessRith prefer to keep them together to form strike units comprised solely of Na´Ctka Moqukas. This concentrates the fighters´ firepower and makes for a frighteningly resilient and aggressive group. The Na´Ctka is a favourite fighter to accompany capital ships because of its ability to deal large amounts of damage even to a Leviathan. KessRith pilots love to be at the forefront of battle with a strong opponent, and a Na´Ctka Moquka lets them take the fight to the enemy with a fair chance of hurting them.

Raiding Action[]

With their low acceleration, Na´Ctka Moqukas are hardly suited to quick hit-and-run raids. KessRith raiding tactics rely on blunt force, sweeping in to annihilate their target. Intercepting enemy fighters are dealt with by the swarms of Na´Ctkas and other craft. Kess raids tend to be protracted affairs in comparison to other forces´ quick in-and-out strikes, enabling more system defense starships to rush to the target´s aid, but the heavy armour and shielding on the Na´Ctka Moquka makes sure they can weather this increased attention.
