Etymology[]
Malamsara is a character from the K'ekasalavo, the Naram Book of Tales. Pursued by enemies, she took the advice of a snake and hid herself in a nest of leaves near a riverbed. The pursuers were misled, became caught in the flood and were carried away toward the sea.
Vikka is a Baufrin word meaning "snake-person" or "person associated with snakes", a term also referring to a person especially adept at fieldcraft.
Production History[]
The Malamsara was a light grav vehicle of the Naram Republic. It was produced on Veska, a planet in the part of the Republic that was later to become the TOG-occupied Dalvik District. Naram Legionnaires fleeing the District after the unrest in 6816 took their Malamsaras with them, which were integrated into several Commonwealth light Strike and B'ekkal Legions. Realising the usefulness of the fast, light recon vehicle, B'ekkal commanders began petitioning the Commonwealth Military Procurement Board to start production of a Commonwealth-built version of the Malamsara. LeQavi Inc., a Naram-Baufrin conglomerate, won the bid for the contract, and has been producing its own model, the Vikka, continuously since 6820.
The Vikka and the Malamsara are near-identical; some systems were modernised and made easier to operate by other species such as Ssora and Baufrin in the Vikka model. To date, most of the Malamsaras in service have already been retrofitted with those improvements.
Design Philosophy and Operational Role[]
Lightly armed, armoured and shielded, the Malamsara is not suited for prolonged combat with enemy vehicles. Its weaponry is short-ranged and intended only for self-defense, consisting of a single turret-mounted 25mm Gauss cannon and a TVLG-4 system. A hull-mounted AP laser was added to protect the vehicle against infantry ambushes.
The main purpose of the tank is to scout ahead of the main force of its Century, evading when it encounters an enemy and letting other vehicles deal with the threat. In militia and garrison complements, platoons of Malamsaras are used in sweeping patrols. The Malamsara´s high acceleration and exceptional nimbleness lets the vehicle cover a lot of ground in a short time, and the improved Rescomm-55 sensor systems make Vikkas and retrofitted Malamsaras excellent reconnaissance vehicles. Recently, the CAF have also started assigning Vikkas to artillery Centuries as forward observers, with some success.
