The ubiquituous Liberator (often abbreviated "Lib" by the soldiers who ride it) is the standard medium grav tank of the Renegade Legions and also used extensively among their Commonwealth allies. It is based on the Opprimo, an older TOG design which defecting TOG Legions brought with them.
Design Philosophy and Tactical Role[]
Like all combat vehicles, a tank reflects the various trade-offs all designers face between speed, firepower and protection. In the case of the Liberator, the designers gave greater weight to speed and firepower, while somewhat degrading protection.
The combination of a 5/6 laser, 150mm Gauss cannon and a 50mm coaxial Gauss cannon in a fully rotating turret make the Liberator a dangerous opponent in mobile combat. The protection afforded by the Vulcan-3 anti-missile system partially offsets the lower-than-standard shielding, while its large TVLG missile load allows for extended combat operations.
Unlike most tanks, the Liberator´s turret is relatively fragile, especially when compared to the armour protection on its blocky wedge-shaped hull. This is due to the use of externally mounted weapon systems to the left and right of the turret. Though externally mounting the weapons greatly eases maintenance and repair, and improves the habitability of the tank´s interior by no small degree, it also increases the probability of losing the weapons to hostile fire.
