The Horatius is the standard TOG medium grav tank. It was originally designed by the IDAMAC-XLI computer after the required specifications for a new medium AFV were fed into the computer in 6825. The original design called for the 150mm Gauss cannon to be installed in the turret and the main laser and SMLM system to be in the body, but the strain caused on the turret system by the large gauss cannon led to the current arrangement.

Naming[]

Horatius Cocles was an ancient Roman Legionnaire who single-handedly held off the Etruscan army at the Sublician Bridge leading into Rome. To honour Horatius´ valour in saving Rome that day, TOG gave his name to its newest medium grav tank.

Design Philosophy and Tactical Role[]

The Horatius is a superb balance of speed, firepower and armour protection. The 50mm Gauss cannon located on the turret´s left side is a new design. A common major problem with small-caliber Gauss cannon is that the barrels will melt after a few firings unless equipped with complex and heavy cooling systems. The Horatius mounts a rotating four-barrel system, which allows the barrel to cool naturally before firing again. Though the rotating mechanism does not weigh or cost less than a conventional cooling system, this new device simplifies field maintenance immensely.

Another unusual feature of the Horatius is its secondary infantry digging cannon. Instead of firing the digging charges evenly to the left and right of the main crater, the Horatius´ charges are all thrown to the left side. Because the tank does not carry infantry, this abnormality of design was not considered serious. The quirk did cause confusion once the tank saw battle, however, when half the dismounted Legionnaires taking up positions around a recently dug Horatius crater could not find any foxholes.

Variants[]

The original version prototype of the Horatius mounted the 150mm Gauss cannon in the turret. Field testing during Operation Distant Fire by the 3794th Strike Legion revealed a major design flaw: the recoil of the gun would shake the turret off its ring mount after a few shots, freezing the turret in the position it had at the moment of firing. The problem was never successfully resolved; in the end, the designers just went and mounted the 150mm in the hull.

There are a few of the original prototype Horatii still in circulation. The Centurion special rules are as follows: whenever the player firing the 150mm rolls a 10 on their to-hit roll, roll D10 again. If the result is 9 or 10, the turret is jammed in its current position until the end of the game.
